Ball Python

Ball pythons (Python regius) are docile, medium-sized constrictors native to West and Central Africa. Known for their calm temperament and manageable size, they are one of the most popular pet snakes. They get their name from their tendency to curl into a tight ball when stressed or threatened.

Handling

Generally docile and tolerate handling well. Support body weight, move slowly, and avoid handling during shedding or after feeding. Wait 48-72 hours after feeding before handling.

Health

Hardy species when proper husbandry is maintained. Monitor for signs of illness and consult a qualified reptile veterinarian for any health concerns.

  • respiratory infections from low temperatures or poor ventilation
  • scale rot from overly wet conditions
  • mites
  • stuck shed from low humidity
  • feeding refusal

Breeding

Reaches sexual maturity at 2-4 years. Requires cooling period and weight cycling. Males should be 700+ grams, females 1200+ grams. Breeding is complex and requires experience.

Morphs

Hundreds of color and pattern morphs available including albino, piebald, banana, clown, and many designer combinations. Morphs can significantly affect price but care requirements remain the same.
